Sharon Stedman case study Since begging us humans are looking for the answer about life and when and where it starts? This leads us to very controversial issue about beginning of life. Some argue that life began at the time of conception and some says birth or later. This leads us to another subject, abortion, which is also very controversial matter. In today’s word, abortion is taking place everywhere. Many of us claim that abortion is murder. Majority agrees with a fact that life start when an egg and sperm meets and fertilization starts. Since fetus have their own genetic code, it is a new life. With that said fetus is another being and have its own rights. I agree that it is Mrs. Stedman’s fundamental right and personal choice to keep her baby or abort it. One can also argue that it is her own body and also keeping her pregnancy can affect her partnership with Van Patten, but that is not the only one factor we need to consider. In this case study we also need to look for rights of fetuses too. Fetus is a growing baby and to kill a growing baby is consider murder, because fetus begin berating on its own without mother’s support. On one hand one can claim that Mrs. Stedman’s have rights not to stay pregnant. On other hand unborn baby also have right not to be killed. This can arise a question that which right is fundamental. I think that there is no other right that can the right to life. In this case study we are talking about rights of two people stand in opposition to each other. In reality the law even protect the more fundamental right, which in this case is the right of fetus, and abortion will take away its more fundamental rights of innocent human being. The codes together with the other practice standards provide the guidelines for professional and legal nursing practice in the management, clinical, and in the research domain. These codes are intended for various audiences, they include Nursing students, nurses, health workers, and patients. Having this in mind, the essay will discuss how the two documents guide nursing professionals in their clinical practice, this will be supported by relevant references. According to the codes of conducts, nurses are to practice in a competent and safe manner. In this case, nurses are supposed to provide competent and safe nursing care. It is the nurses responsibility to act competently in their clinical practice. In order for nurses to act and remain competent, they should participate in professional development programs, this is imperative, as it will improve their knowledge and skills relevant to their clinical practice. Further, the safety of the patients is the primary concern in the clinical practice. Therefore, nurses should undertake activities that are within their scope to avoid compromising the safety of patients. In addition, nurses should act in a competent and safe manner without being comprised by their health; this includes the use of substances and alcohol, which will affect the nurses ability to practice safely. In this case, it is both an ethical and legal requirement for nurses to protect the privacy for persons receiving or requiring care. Nurses are restricted to use the information gathered only for professional purposes. However, nurses can disclose the information gathered to other members of the medical team for decision-making purposes. Consequently, where applicable, nurses should seek the approval of the persons receiving care before disclosing such information. In the nonexistence of approval, nurses should use their professional judgment in disclosing the information, in such a case, the nurse should consider the wellbeing, interest, and the safety of the person before making such disclosures (Birks, Davis, Smithson, Cant, 2016). Nurses are to provide honest, impartial, and accurate information in regards to the health care products and the nursing care (Casey et al. 2017). Nurses should explain all the disadvantages and the advantages of using a particular product so that individuals can make an informed decision in using the product. In this case, nurses should cease from misinformation, exploitation, and misrepresentation of the health care products. In addition, nurses should accurately disclose accurate information on the nature of nursing care they provide (Green, 2017). Hence, the deception on the nursing care and the endorsement of products for their personal gain is improper and unethical. Therefore, the codes of conduct stipulate that nurses to support the wellbeing, health, and the decisions of the persons receiving care and they should assist persons to make decisions on their health. However, in cases where a person is unwilling or unable to speak independently, nurses should ensure representatio n by an apt advocate. Nurses are supposed to preserve and promote the privilege and trust intrinsic in the relationship between the persons receiving care and the nurses (Bernoth, Dietsch, Burmeister Schwartz, 2014). The intrinsic factor can lead to power balance. The power balance between the nurse and the person receiving care arise in cases where the persons receiving care has limited knowledge, needs assistance, is in pain, and belongs to a minority group just to mention a few. These intrinsic factors between nurses and persons receiving care may make the persons receiving care vulnerable to exploitation. In this case, the intrinsic factors should be recognized and manage by upholding the dignity of the persons they attend through practicing respect and kindness to all. Further, nurses should apply measures to establish trust in order to ensure the emotional, psychological, and wellbeing of the persons receiving care is protected (Birks, Davis, Smithson Cant, 2016). The Australian code of conduct for nurses requires nurses to build and maintain public confidence and trust in the course of their practice (Schmidt, MacWilliams Neal-Boylan, 2016). Unethical and unlawful practices by nurses adversely affect the reputation of the profession in the public eye. In this case, nurses are supposed to consider the interest of the nursing profession when expressing their rights to speech when participating in academic and political debates. Therefore, it is the obligation of nurses to build and maintain public confidence and trust in the profession always (Schneider Whitehead, 2013). Finally, nurses should at all time practice ethically and reflectively. According to the codes of Ethics, nurses should maintain and develop current and appropriate support, nursing advice, and care for all the persons receiving and requiring care, this duty applies also to nurse partners (Cashin, Bryce, Devey, Buckley, Cox Fisher, 2016). In order for nurses to provide quality of care, they should act competently in accordance with the guiding standards as stipulated in the code of conducts for the Australian nurses. In addition, nurses should not involve themselves in a sexual relationship with the persons under their care as such relationships raise integrity concerns. In the case of intimate or sexual behaviors, the consent cannot be used as a defense. In addition, nurses are not supposed to provide care to persons they have not- professional relationships, if possible, re- assignment of such persons to other nurses should be considered. To Do It Or Not To Do It. . . Does antbody really listen to the real issues of sex? No, they want to test it out on their own and most don't care about HIV, AIDS, or STD's. I am here to inform the reading audience of this serious issue. Yeah, I was young, I wanted to experiment, but it was the dumbest thing I ever did. I wound up pregnant with a daughter and found out, while giving birth at the age of 15, that I had herpes. I was mortified. I was ashamed. And, most of all, I couldn't bare talking to the father of my child so I just left the state and moved to Canada. It wasn't until the cops found me and told me the father of my child was suing me for custody of my child and made charges against me for kidnapping our child. This terrifying experience landed me in jail for 10 years and 6 months, giving custody to the father and permanently destroying my life. I am here to give a shout out to all those who are intrigued by the sexual world, please get yourself and the partner you plan on doing it with checked out b efore you go on. When reading two articles that have been decades away, people will see the national opinion changed the immigrants. In the article of 1905, the southern part was cheap labor and he wanted immigrants. Almost 80 years later in 1983, the south showed different views on immigrants. In the 1905 article Immigration and South, Robert DeCoury Ward has just started talking about the idea that immigrants may be unfavorable for the US economy. Instead, in the 1983 article Immigration: How It Affects the United States, James Faros said drowsily that immigrants are harmful to the United States. Today 's Americans know that there are problems with illegal immigration. Every day many illegal immigrants pass through the country. There are 122 million to 20 million illegal immigrants in the United States. The United States should also develop plans for immigrants to obtain legal permission. But they have not succeeded. This seems to be an impossible task, thousands of people travel every day, many deceive the United States by getting a working visa and returning home. What happens if you allow millions of people to enter the country, whether legal or illegal? What happened today? You have dozens, hundreds of different nationalities from various places. Achilles statue is godlike, his strength is superior, and his powers with a spear unsurpassed. He wears immortal armor and has talking horses. While Achilles is superhuman, Hector is completely human surrounded by his wife and child. As the eldest son of Priam and Hekuba, king and queen of Troy, Hector is the commander of the Trojan army. Hector has strong feelings of responsibility for his community. Troy is a center of culture with elaborate palaces and surrounds Hector and his family with stability. Achilles is a young, complex warrior capable of great cruelty and kindness. Homer always portrays him in extreme passion. He comes to Troy, knowing he will die because he wants honor and glory. He chooses glory and an early death, rather than a long, inglorious life. When Achilles argues with Agamemnon, Achilles reaction is deadly anger (1.190). Although he wants to fight, his stubborn pride compels him to sulk. He rejects pleas to return to the battle. In order to please Patroklos, Achilles finally compromises and allows Patroklos to return to battle wearing Achilles armor. Achilles allows Patroklos to go to his death. Only after Patroklos death does Achilles see that his sitting by his ships is a useless weight on the good land (18.104) which sacrificed many of his mens lives. Achilles is angrier than ever. He tears at his hair with his hands, and defiles it (18.27). Achilles anger, grief, and sorrow is expressed in vengeance. He wants revenge for Patroklos death. Grief stricken and raged, Achilles pursued Hector around walls of Troy 3 times, killed him and tied his lifeless body to his chariot and dragged it (22.401). Hectors fear of death is overcome by his fear of disgrace (7.215-18). Hector is more cautious, practical, and virtuous. Iris tells him to marshal the troops, and he does so (2.802). When Paris proposes a duel, Hector and Odysseus make practical arrangements while Priam and Agamemnon exchange the oath (3.264-317). Hector always appears as a hero of responsibilities. Hectors virtues are the outcome of his responsiveness to society. He is aware that his own virtues are conditioned rather than natural or spontaneous. He has schooled himself to play the warriors role and to be good (6.441-46). He does not question the order of things or shirk his duties. Although they both want glory, Achilles and Hector fight for different reasons. Achilles is an absolute hero who acts only for himself and for the glory of himself. He is an independent warrior in the army of Troy. He can return home when he pleases. His refusal to fight is an indication that he retains his independence. Achilles has no personal grievance against Troy (8.154). Achilles asked Zeus to help his enemies, the Trojans, kill his friends because his personal honor weighs more with him than the lives of his friends. He came to Troy, knowing he would die. He came because he cared so much for glory. He chooses glory and an early death rather than the pleasure of a long inglorious life (18.98). Hectors nobility and sense of loyalty demand that he fight. He is a hero of responsibilities; he never questions his responsibility to Troy. Hector places his life at the service of others. He fights for family and city, but he also fights so that he will not lose the respect of others. Hector is a warrior not because he loves war, but because he is provoked by his perception of his place in the social structure of Troy and of his obligation to the people.

Jane Elliot’s Experiment

A Divided Class From the moment our country was created, one of the main liberties we asked for was the idea of equality, â€Å"that all men will be created equal. † Although this has been a part of the American ideal since 1776, American’s have not fulfilled this liberty. Individuals do not admit it, but many are still prejudice against minorities, particularly African Americans. In the 1960’s, around the time when Martin Luther King Jr. as fighting for civil rights for people of color, a 3rd grade school teacher, Jane Elliot, from Riceville, Iowa was busy at work in an attempt to recreate the negative emotional and physical effects of racism within her classroom. She created an experiment in which she divided her students into unequal groups as a way of creating artificial stereotypes, prejudices, and discrimination. Jane Elliot eventually expanded her experiments into the adult population. She has done these experiments on corrections workers in prisons, as we ll as college students.Through all these experiments, Jane Elliot has made many conclusions and generalizations that can directly relate back to the real world, and hopefully aid in solving the problem of racism. Jane Elliot’s experimentation with stereotypes first began within the walls of her 3rd grade classroom. Before the experiment began she asked the students for their opinions on minority groups. Many of the students answered with statements regarding black people as being dumb and different than whites. They also discussed how African Americans do not have the same opportunities as white people do because of the color of their skin.Jane Elliot continued by effectively dividing the students into unequal groups based on eye color. From the initial division, Jane Elliot treated the students in the brown eyed group as if they were inferior to those in the blue eyed group. She set a vast amount of boundaries limiting what those in the bottom could do, and in contrast expan ding what those in the top could do. This document had a lot of great points that stood out as I viewed the film. The fact that these third grades actually understood this exercises was one point that just touched my heart.If little babies can understand that racism is not the way to go; then adults should be about to let it go as well and treat everyone equal. Another thing that stood out is when Jane Elliot was doing the study with the adults in her and another white lady were going back in forward with one another. That caught my eye since the white lady felt like she could talk to Jane Elliot any kind of way. In the real world a lot of white people do feel that they are above everyone and can say and do as they please. In that incident just goes to show the truth to that.Three social psychology terms I remember from the film â€Å"A Divided Class† were stereotype, prejudice, and discrimination. These three terms stuck with me because they are basically the base terms when it comes to social psychology. Stereotype is the generalization about a group of people in which certain traits are assigned to virtually all members of the group, regardless of actual variation among the members. This goes hand to hand with the film since the kids were made to believe that everyone with brown eyes was less than the kids with blue eyes.That is stereotyping since they did not try to get to know one another for who they really are but for what they were told about them. Prejudice is a hostile or negative attitude toward a distinguishable group of people, based solely on their membership of that group. For example, Jane Elliot told the blue eye kids to be mean and not listen to the brown eye kids. This was done to show the meaning of prejudice. Since the kids gave the brown eye kids a very negative attitude just because they had brown eyes. Discrimination is unjustified negative or harmful action toward a member of a group simply because his or her membership in that group.The kids in class did not allow the brown eye kids to play on the big toy that was an act of discrimination. They were being negative since the kids had brown eyes and not blue. In closing, when I meet people who seem racist or come from families where parents have told them that black does more bad stuff then us white folks, I always ask â€Å"what if we all had the same skin color? Who would be the bad guy? I believe it is the fear, it is always easier to point fingers telling, hey it’s because he is black, hey it’s because he got a mental illness, however people would be in shock soon as someone say he is a normally family guy† then you can’t point fingers. I some time feel victimize, and it’s hard to accept and realized how evil some people can be and how judgmental they are as well. Study on the effects of occupational therapy Occupational therapy (OT) is about helping people of all ages conduct and improve their ability to perform their daily activities that occupy their time in their environment (Hussey, Sabonis-Chafee, OBrien, 2007). The environment to which individuals may wish to perform tasks could be in home, work, school or community settings (Hagedorn, 2000). The roles of occupational therapists (OTs) are to work with individuals to help them achieve a fulfilled and satisfied state in life (Crepeau, Cohn, Schell, 2009). Activities or interventions may be used to achieve functional results that promote health, prevent injury or disability so that individual may become independent as a result. OTs work with a range of people that may have conditions that are mentally, physically, developmentally, socially or emotionally disadvantaged (Crepeau, et al., 2009). Therefore they help individuals to develop, recover or maintain their skills to be able to conduct activities that they deem important. The reason why OTs wants to find out about a persons occupation is to determine what is important to the individual and how they may conduct these occupations and how all these occupations contribute to the greater good of health. A persons occupational performance is influenced by their health and the need for personal satisfaction in what they do (Crepeau, et al., 2009). This is why OTs may conduct interviews before implementing interventions. It is a way for OTs to collect informed information regarding to the needs of individuals and what they find important in their lives. The initial interview would be about gathering basic information about the individual and going through name, age, occupation and what important roles they have in their lives. As OTs, it is very important that focus is client-centred and allow clients to evaluate their performance and the importance of roles in their lives. The Person-Environment-Occupation-Performance (PEOP) model is a client-centred model that is used to improve the performance of individuals in their daily lives (Christiansen Baum, 2005). The model was developed in 1985 and was first published in 1991. The PEOP model includes the interactions of occupation, performance and participation that are involved between the person and environment when they carry out their activities in their daily lives. The model talks about the personal factors and environmental factors that support enable or restrict the performance of individual to their activities, tasks and roles that are present in their lives. In the PEOP model, OT intervention is a method of using a wide range of client-centred strategies that connect the individual or group to develop or use sources that enable them to successfully perform necessary and significant occupations. It takes into account that satisfaction of performing occupations is related to the individual or group goals and environmental factors that may or may not inhibit participation. The PEOP model has four major components. These four components are occupations, performance, person and environment (Christiansen Baum, 2005). It describes what people want or need to do in their daily lives (occupation), the act of performing the occupation (performance), and how psychological, physiological, neurobehavioral, cognitive and spiritual factors (person) combine with the location the occupation is conducted (environment) influence success. The individual ability or skills is what determine whether the individual is competent to do what they must to meet personal needs. The individual must make use of resources that are available within the environment to effectively meet these needs. The model also has the belief that the situations where people feel success also help them feel good about themselves. Therefore it acts as a motivator to allow individuals to face challenges with confidence. It is said in Christiansen Baum, that fulfilment comes both from feelings of mas tery as well as the accomplishment of goals that have personal meaning (Christiansen Baum, 2005). This indicates that individual will feel more accomplished doing occupations that they like doing and is important to them, rather than something they dont find important. According to Henry Kramer, interviewing is a shared verbal experience, jointly constructed by the interviewer and the interviewee, organized around the asking and answering of questions (Crepeau, et al., 2009). Asking good questions is not a natural phenomenon and requires practice (Miller, 2009). This is why communication skills are essential in interviewing. Interviewing requires three key elements, questioning, active listening and interpreting body language (OToole, 2008; Williams, 1997). The aim of an interview is to collectively obtain information, offer advice, support and discuss treatment (Williams, 1997). Through the process, OTs is able to establish and maintain a relationship with the client. It is important in any interview to be prepared and consider that the location where the interview will take place will set the mood. If the interview is conducted in an office, it can give feeling of formality and if the interview is conducted in a clinic, it can be associated with illness. Individuals response to these different settings may be associated to previous experiences that they may have encountered in the past. Their reaction can vary and as an interviewer, awareness should be recognized. The location of the interview can also give the purpose of the interview so it is important that suitable location be chosen. There are three phases to an interview; phase 1 is the introductory phase, phase 2 is the working phase and phase 3 is the termination. Effective communication requires mutual understanding from both interviewer and interviewee. Health professionals must ensure that clients understand the meaning and purpose of interview and why it is conducted. The interview requires that information be shared, there is a goal to reach same understanding, understanding of background and culture, a willingness to understand points of view, respect for self and other and show empathy when appropriate (Higgs, Ajjawi, McAllister, Trede, Loftus, 2008). Communication skills required in an interview include verbal communication, non-verbal communication and active listening. An example of verbal communications is the effective use of speech to ask appropriate questions and the structure of language used (Williams, 1997). The structure of the language is the way that words are put together to form sentences to give information or seek information. Verbal communications are ways of individuals expressing their ideas, concepts and emotions, give description, provide information and solve problems (OToole, 2008; Stein-Parbury, 2006; Williams, 1997). Non-verbal communication is communicating without using words to express oneself. These could include eye-contact, facial expression, body postures and behaviours, voice and volume alterations and physical space (Egan, 2007; OToole, 2008; Stein-Parbury, 2006; Williams, 1997). Active listening requires interviewer to actively listen and give verbal and non-verbal responses to show that they ar e listening. Interviewer can use non-verbal responses known as SOLER to engage in the interview. SOLER stands for sit squarely, open posture, lean toward the client, eye contact and relax. Prompts can also be used in non-verbal response to encourage interviewee to talk further or know that you are present. Verbal response includes using the three Rs; restatement, reflection and re-clarification. Phase 1 of the interview is the introductory phase. This is where introductions and purpose of the interview is explained. Permission was asked to use clients first name to be more comfortable and to create a relax environment. In this phase of the interview, the client and interviewer is sitting squarely facing each other in a small quiet room. The client is actively listening to the information told. Her actions included eye-contact, sitting squarely, using prompts such as nodding and yep as indications. There was a bit of closed postured, clasped hands and fidgety shown by client at the start that could be attributed to nervousness and uncertainty of interview. As the interviewer, verbal communication is essential in relaying the information about the purpose of the interview. This is where effective verbal communication comes into play. Effective use of speech was present but the structure of language needs to be improved. After explanation of what an OTs does, interviewer asked Do you kind of get what Im trying to say? in an uncertain voice. Interviewer could have rephrased it in a more confident reassurance voice and asked if the client understood the information and whether shed like to ask any questions. The style of language used here could be differences between social contexts. The use of formal language may not be used frequently in daily lives which make the interviewer structure of language seem a bit informal when asked. Being unsure of your own questions also leads client to perceive that it was okay to agree since it is an uncertain question. The object of an interviewer is to be confident and be able to express clearly and concisely the questions asked. Interviewer showed facial expressions and hand gestures while explaining. This could be an indication of nervousness or a habit that the interviewer may possess. Even though eye-contact was made with client, SOLER was not effectively used. At the start, interviewer is sitting squarely, leaning forward and maintained eye-contact but was not in an open relaxed posture. This was attributed to nervousness as interview progress; interviewer became more open and relaxed. Phase 2 of the interview is involved in asking relevant questions to get a clearer picture of clients occupation and history. It is where most information is collected and requires the use of a range of communication skills. SOLER was maintained throughout the interview by the interviewer and verbal prompts was used at appropriate situations to verify information that client had said. Nodding and hand gestures were used quite often to encourage client to continue talking and sharing information. In an interview, a range of questioning style is used. An example of an open question is How do you feel having to travel one and half hour to get to uni? These types of open questions allow clients to elaborate more on details and give indication to their emotions. Even though closed questions are not desirable, interviewer did make use of them. One of such is How long do you drive to uni? There is only one answer possible and does not make use of client views or feelings in this situation. Probing questions was also lacking in this interview, interviewer did not make use of this questioning style to seek out specific information. One example that is viewed is Is that the only problem you have as being a student? The question is used to question client whether the particular problem given was the only one present to being a student. Reflective questions was used to reflect a topic back for clarifications, So far youve told me that you are a student, girlfriend and you also like to keep active, is there any other activities that you enjoy doing? Some bad examples of questioning styles that should be avoided that was used in the interview was multiple and leading questions. Do you have any other career path you want to take after studying this degree? Or do you want to just find a job afterwards and be happy with that? The questions does not allow client to answer and also leads them to answer in a certain way that you have asked. Non-verbal communication skills is seen in eye-contact, facial expression, gestures, body postures and head movements. Throughout the interviewing process, eye-contact was maintained in client and interviewer. In some culture, eye-contact is not seen as appropriate when talking to elders (Crepeau, et al., 2009). Eye-contact can also become uncomfortable if used with strangers and you are expected to maintain focus for a period of time. As OTs, it is appropriate to keep an open view of clients and know that depending on their culture and values, they may conduct and act in different ways. Facial expressions on the other hand are what characterise a person. It is an important aspect of expressing emotions and expressing how we feel. Client used smile as a positive feedback when talking about her family and boyfriend. It is indications that these are the things that the client values and find enjoyment in. When she was unsure of her answers, her eyebrows would be raised upwards. Facial expression belongs to individuals and each person has their own way of expressing themselves. Gestures are also a form of communication and are seen in the movement of head, hands and body parts. It just acts as ways that individual may use these parts to emphasise and reinforce information. Body postures refers to the position of the body and limbs (Williams, 1997). The postures adopted by the client was slightly leaned forward back with arms placed together in front of her laps. The interviewer on the other hand has her body leaned forward towards the client and arms resting on legs to cater for the book in front of her. The importance of postures can give indications to individual emotions. A slump shoulder and crossed arms could indicate lack of interest or boredom. Phase 3 is the termination where information is summarized and clarified, client is thanked and ending of interview. Interviewer successfully used all mentioned techniques in this last phase but the language and structure of speech used could be improved. This could come with practice and experience. The voice used in the interview also gives indication to the emotions that is conveyed by clients and should be picked up when possible. The rate of speech or tone of voice express emotion and convey information about attitudes to certain things. Each individual have their characterised voice that distinguished us from someone else. It is with our voice that we can allow our emotions and feelings be conveyed. Interviewing requires multiple communication skills and practice to execute a good interview. Communication skills are not always verbal but include the non-verbal communication that is expressed through facial expression, gestures and eye-contact. Each individual have their own way of expressing themselves whether verbally or non-verbally. It is a good interviewer that is able to pick up on cues to allow them to adjust to client when interviewing. Interviewing requires interviewer to actively listen, question and empathize with clients. Through the use of PEOP model, the interview is able to be carried out and informed information is collected on the person, occupation, environment and performance.
